Workshops 2023

Of course we have plenty of options to dance in the evenings at CaDansa, but we also offer you some workshops on Friday and Saturday. There are workshops for musiscians and dancers. We’ve got 18 unique and different workshops to choose from. The workshops are for different levels of experience, for if you just started with balfolk or if you’ve been with us every edition of CaDansa. Don’t forget to check if you need to register for the workshop(s) you’ve choses. For some of the workshops, there is a maximum of people who can join. You can register for the workshops until 9.00 in the morning of the day of the workshop.

You can register here for the workshop of your choice after October 4th 12.00.

The workshops are in different locations: the open stage, the theatre, the balletroom and the gymhall. The gymhall is in another location than the festival. You can find it at School B at Mr. Z. ter Steghestraat 3 in Steenwijk. It’s at a distance of 600 meters. The other three locations are at CaDansa itself, in the same building.

No registration needed
Teacher: Louise and Marco

Friday

FULL
Argentine tango
11.30 to 16.00
Balletroom
Registration needed
Teacher: Bart Boskaljon and Sofie van Roessel

THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL. WE DON’T HAVE A WAITING LIST, BUT YOU CAN TRY AT THE FESTIVAL IF THERE’S A SPOT AVAILABLE, IT’S NOT A GUARANTEE. The Tango is a beautiful dance full of improvisation, connection, sensation and fun. In this workshop you will learn the basics of this beautiful dance. We’ll dance in a closed embrace, look for the rhythm in the music that suits us and take all the time for our movements. Tango is a technical dance without a fixed step structure. We therefore do not focus so much on learning figures but more on learning (body) technique. In this workshop we won’t combine Tango with other folk dances. No dance experience is required for this workshop. You must register in advance (as a leader or follower). Please note: this workshop lasts 4 hours (2 workshop blocks). As the workshop is long and there is limited space, we only ask you to participate if you really intend to participate until the end.

Festival skills: optimize the dance space for everybody
11.3o to 13.30
Open Stage
No registration needed
Teacher: Koen Dhondt

How to avoid spirals in jigs and cercles; it’s a real epidemic lately and no, it’s not the fault of the beginners! How to solve waltz traffic jams near the stage? How to stop my neighbours from bumping into me…? Better floor management can make the dance experience a lot nicer for everybody. Most dancers have basic skills that give nice results on small or medium dance floors, but lack the advanced skills that are needed on (crowded) festivals. Koen has been reflecting a lot on this subject, and has some new insights to share with all of you. If you’re wondering whom this workshop is for…. if you think you have nothing to learn on this topic, well … then you should definitely come to this workshop!

So you think you can dance?
14.00 to 16.00
Open Stage
No registration needed
Teacher: Jolanda Snellenberg and Janniek Wester

For everyone who feels comfortable on the dancefloor and likes to change things up a bit. Challenge your feet, ears, brain and probably also your partner! In this workshop you’re going to examine your dance-style and then find the space in that. Learn new possibilities for variations, communication, interpretation… But beware, it’s going to be crazy! The level of this workshop is advanced: you must be able to dance couple dances without having to think.

Branle de Noirmoutier
14.00 to 16.00
Theatre
No registration needed
Teacher: Saskia Sportel and Arthur Abeille

Once from the isle of Noirmoutier (Vendee, Poitou, France), this previously obscure collective dance has become very popular these last 10-12 years. You may recognize it: sets of lines, seemingly chasing each other back and forth. This workshop we will discover movements and steps that get our lines dancing like it’s no-one’s business. What’s up with the arms going up? Who’s hopping the hop-step? Which line lasts the longest, yours or mine? All are welcome to join, but we may go too fast for beginners. Especially suited for anyone who has seen or danced this in ball situations before and would like to learn more about it. Spoiler: the groove, steps and arm movements seen at the balls are probably different from what you’ll learn here 🙂

Dutch dances
11.30 to 13.30
Open Stage
No registration needed
Teacher: Anita van Brunschot

Balfolk is fantastic, but there is more! During CaDansa in the Netherlands you will have the opportunity to add some Dutch dances to your repertoire. Dutch dances are mainly figure dances, ranging from simple to challenging, with beautiful melodies. And we’ll dance to live music by Wouter Kuyper (diatonic accordion), so that alone is worth it. Come join in! Everyone is welcome. The steps are not difficult, but to remember the choreographies your memory gets somewhat challenged. De workshop is in het Nederlands en wordt vertaald naar Engels.

Chacarera
11.30 to 13.30
Gymhall (Mr. Z. ter Steghestraat 3, Steenwijk (600m distance)
No registration needed
Teacher:Bart Boskaljon

The Chacarera is an Argentine folk dance that resembles a combination of bourrées, but with a good dash of Latin added. The basics are relatively simple and in this workshop you will learn enough to be able to dance the Chacarera. We’ll not only work with the basic steps, but also with the feeling and emotions that come with the dance. Together we’ll listen to the rhythms of the Chacarera and form the dance piece by piece. Fun is an important element in the Chacarera! While the Chacarera is traditionally danced in pairs (man + woman), you do not need a partner for this workshop. Dancing experience is also not required.

Bourrée berry
14.00 to 16.00
Open Stage
No registration needed
Teacher: Saskia Sportel and Arthur Abeille

It’s time for bourrée! We look forward to exploring possibilities of play in, what we call, bourrée de Berry. This workshop is great for those who enjoy dancing these bourrées, and could use some technical skills: to dance smoothly, have fun improvising and discover group bourrées. In this workshop we will spend some time on the steps and some key elements that make up the moves: the music, body orientation and body position in space. As a bonus, you will learn two choreographed group bourrées, in quartet and in lines, that have all these elements in them. We will then isolate the moves and use them as our improv skills with just one partner across from us (‘as usual’). This workshop is meant for everyone who’ve danced bourée before (a few times). You’ve got the enthusiasm, so now is a great time to polish off and spice up your moves. Best suited for those who feel at home with ‘(semi-)beginner’ or ‘intermediate’, but all are welcome. And, did you know? These bourrées are often called “bourrée in 2 times” but did you know that musically these can be in 3 times as well?

Musicality for dancers

Gymhall (Mr. Z. ter Steghestraat 3, Steenwijk (600m distance)

No musical knowledge required. We’re going to work with info & tips on understanding folk music : structure, rhythms, dances, styles, improvisations, differences, as well as different listening exercises, combined with variations in connection with the music of Naragonia and we’ll also practise how to improvise your own variations in connection with the music, during the dance.

Then join this introduction workshop! One of the most common instruments in Balfolk is the diatonic accordion. The basics of the button accordion are quite simple, compared to the years of practice it takes to be able to play the violin or bagpipes producing a nice sound. With the diatonic accordion you only have to push the right button and squeeze or pull the bellows of the accordion. Of course it is more complicated than that to make truly beautiful music, but you can learn the basics in just a few hours. Wouter will make you play some music on this instrument. He will explain the basics and give you plenty of opportunity to practice and ask questions.Everybody is welcome. If you already have a diatonic accordion: great, bring it! Don’t have one? No problem! We will provide extra instruments.

These are the instruments that also appear in the paintings of Jan Steen or Pieter Brueghel. You don’t need to bring an instrument: they are provided by the Dutch Hurdy-gurdy and Bagpipe Foundation (Draailier & Doedelzak). We don’t have any Scottish or Irish bagpipes with us. Saturday

Irish pub session
11.30 to 13.30
Musicroom 'Otter'
Registration needed
Teacher: Erik de Jong

During this workshop, we will look at various characteristics of an Irish pub session. We’ll focus on the instrumental part of the session: the tunes. A bit of background is provided, such as: What is an Irish pub session and what exactly happens? What’s nice about it? What is the etiquette at an (average) Irish session? How do you best prepare yourself? And so forth. But of course we are not there to talk, but to make music! So of course that’s what we’ll mostly do. We’ll look at the different types of tunes you can encounter at an Irish session. The most common are jigs and reels, but there are many more types, which differ in time signature and tempo. Not all Irish music is easy to play in one go, so the teacher will email you some sheet music in advance, so that you can take a look at it (if you wish). We won’t immediately tackle the most difficult tunes, of course, but we will try as many different tunes as possible, so that there is a lot of variety.

The workshop is intended for instrumentalists who know their way around their instrument (reasonably) well*. Both melody instruments and accompaniment instruments (such as percussion and chord instruments) can participate. Irish music is often played smoothly, but we’ll
build up the pace slowly. * In principle, all melody instruments can participate, but you have to take this into account that if you play a B-flat instrument (such as a clarinet), you will have to play with a lot of sharps. Please note: you must register in advance for this workshop.

Boat tour
Friday and Saturday
12.30 to 14.30
Registration needed

Are your feet tired of dancing? Then come relax during the boat tour through national park ‘De Wieden’ (‘The Lakes’) and enjoy the stunning views this uniquely Dutch water landscape offers. Its history is reflected in the tiny houses once owned by peat cutters, the drainage windmills and… why is there a church tower standing in the water? This nature reserve is also home to a great diversity of birds, butterflies, and other animals. If you’re really lucky, you might even spot an otter!

The skipper will be happy to take you to the most beautiful places in National Park the Weerribben – Wieden, one of the largest “low peat” areas in Europe. Low peat (peat under water level) habitats include bog pools, wet woodland, man-made ditch systems and fen grassland. The skipper will tell you about the special history and the rich plant and animal life along the way.

Important:

  • You must register in advance for this workshop. A maximum of 24 people can go on 1 boat.
  • There is a contribution of 2 festival tokens (= 5,60 euro) for the tour, to help us cover the costs of the boat and guide. Hand in the coins at the Info Stand at the festival to receive your ticket for the boat.
  • You will need to arrange your own transport to the visitor center (Beulakerpad 1, Sint Jansklooster). There is a carpool list at the festival where you can arrange a ride.
  • The boat leaves at the start time of the workshop, so please be on time! The boat trip takes 2 hours.
  • The boats are open. Check the weather forecast in advance: on an open boat, it is colder in cool weather than on land. Bring plenty of warm clothes and keep in mind there might be some rain.
